Cell phones have become a daily necessity for many people, not just for communication but also for leisure activities such as surfing the internet, social media, gaming, watching videos, listening to music and podcasts, and many other uses. However, with the increasing use of cell phones, there have been concerns about the potential negative effects on mental health, particularly insomnia and depression.
A study conducted on 346 students from a senior high school in Japan found that extensive use of cell phones was linked to both insomnia and depression. The study comprised of questionnaires that included questions regarding personal data, lifestyle, social support, mobile phone use, insomnia, and depression. The results of the study showed that long hours of mobile phone use was a risk factor for insomnia. It is suggested that overuse of 5 hours or more per day could be a marker of a higher risk of insomnia.
However, depression was not associated with total hours of mobile phone use. Instead, the study found that long hours spent using mobile phones for social media and online chat was related to depression. This finding is supported by other studies that have reported that using social media for more than 2 hours every day was independently associated with poor self-rating of mental health, high levels of psychological distress and suicidal ideation.
The exact mechanism by which cell phone use leads to insomnia and depression is not well understood. However, it is thought that the constant stimulation and connectivity provided by cell phones can disrupt normal sleep patterns and lead to insomnia. Additionally, social media and online chat can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness, which can contribute to depression.
In conclusion, the use of cell phones has been associated with insomnia and depression in a study of 346 students from a senior high school in Japan. The study found that long hours of mobile phone use was a risk factor for insomnia, and overuse of 5 hours or more per day could be a marker of a higher risk of insomnia. Additionally, long hours spent using mobile phones for social media and online chat was related to depression. While more research is needed to fully understand the relationship between cell phone use and mental health, it is clear that excessive cell phone use can have negative effects on sleep and mental well-being. Therefore, it is important to be aware of and limit the amount of time spent using cell phones, especially when it comes to social media and online chat.
